What does an AI consultant cost in 2026?
There is no useful single rate for advice, a working automation, and a whole back office. Price the deliverable first. How should you compare an hourly quote with a fixed price?
Ask for three numbers: the rate, the estimated hours, and the spending limit. Then ask what happens at the limit. A rate alone cannot tell you the project cost; a fixed price alone cannot tell you what is included.
Hourly work can make sense for investigation or a changing backlog. A fixed price is useful once the workflow, dependencies, and acceptance criteria are clear. In either case, put the deliverables, review points, and approval for additional work in writing. The contract matters more than the billing label.
What should an implementation quote include?
A working system needs more than a demonstration. Ask what it will read, what it will produce, which tools it will touch, and what happens when it cannot finish. Then check who tests it, who approves it, and who can run it after handoff.

When is a paid audit worth buying?
When the uncertainty is consequential: nobody has measured the manual work, the systems disagree, the data needs investigation, or several workflows compete for the first build. An audit should help you choose, including a decision to simplify the process or wait.
If the workflow is already defined and can be scoped, you can go directly from the free assessment to a written sprint quote. The audit is not a toll booth. Read the illustrative sample audit to see the decision it should support.
Scoping is worth taking seriously. RAND’s interviews with 65 experienced AI practitioners identified misunderstood problems, missing data, technology-first decisions, inadequate infrastructure, and technical limits as recurring causes of project failure. A low price does not resolve any of those.

How much should you budget for the first year?
At our prices, an audit plus one sprint totals $21,500–$68,500 before the audit credit and ongoing costs. If discovery is unnecessary, budget for the sprint alone. Your audit fee can be credited toward a sprint signed within 60 days, up to 25% of the sprint price.
For example, an $8,500 audit followed by an $18,000 sprint receives a $4,500 credit because of the cap. The combined fees are $22,000 before ongoing costs. A $3,500 audit followed by the same sprint receives the full $3,500 credit if the sprint is signed within 60 days.
Add the monthly tools and model usage, any hardware, your team’s review time, and optional maintenance. Our $50–$500 monthly planning band covers typical small-business tools and model usage; it does not include the build, hardware, internal labor, or Managed Services. Ask for the assumptions behind your own estimate.
Then test the value at a conservative level of adoption. Time returned is capacity; it becomes cash savings only when a cost actually falls. Work through the ROI math, use the calculator as a starting model, and take the 20-point readiness checklist before committing.
